Historical note |

A man named Nicholas was born about 200 A.D. in what we now call Turkey. He soon became known for his generosity and the many miracles that were attributed to him. He was elected the Bishop of the local church in the town of Myra (Turkey) after a vision appeared to the church elders instructing them to elect the first man named Nicholas who entered the church to pray on a certain day and after a certain hour. At that hour, Nicholas entered the church to give thanks for the calming of the seas during a fierce storm. Nicholas became the symbolic "gift giver" figure for the winter solstice celebrations, in keeping with the gifts the Magi gave to the baby, Jesus. Nicholas was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 900 A.D. During the 1600's, Martin Luther's (1483 - 1546) followers declared that Saint Nicholas was detracting from the true meaning of Christmas: the celebration of the birth of Christ. Luther's followers soon adopted their own "gift giving" figure, Kristkindt, an angelic, non-gendered child who went from house to house quizzing the children on their knowledge of the Bible and on their behavior. Kristkindt would give the children gifts and move on to the next house. Mothers soon declared that Kristkindt was too young to go on his travel alone and brought back Saint Nicholas (in more secular robes) to be his escort. |
